An absolute blast of a game that brings a slow burning horror to an overall cute and relaxing vibe. I can't wait to see more of the world and will await us down the road.
I saw this game from Manly and I really like your artstyle! Shopkeeper sounds so sad and the Hero look like a madman from NPC perspective lmao.
Background music is so comfy at first but it shift to something eerie when hero turn weird! Very nice touch!
And I really like that you put mushroom all over the UI (Name tag, Choice, and even when fast-forward) which I very much assume that it's Amanita (obviously).
After looking around your website and in your youtube comment, shopkeeper and hero are called "Muscaria" and "Virosa" which are in "Amanita" genus which is pretty niche to have those details!
What I found out after a look into their wiki pages is that "Amanita Muscaria" having a surprisingly long amount of information! Even longer than "Amanita" and "Amanita Virosa" combined.
Another thing to note is thet Virosa having very cool nickname of "Destroying Angel". It's pretty surreal to me that I gain a little bit more mushroom knowledge after playing this game.
The ending is pretty sad, all 3 of them but my little theory is that all endings are canon, it's just different playthrough of Virosa. The order could be like this: NG+ should be the 1st, Go outside is 2nd, and Demon king is the 3rd.
The only complain I have is the font. Don't get me wrong, the font is very cute but the letter "I" is bugging my eye so much. The letter "I" and "J" look too close to each other in my opinion.
Things I want to asked is about Virosa blue and Red cloth. is there any meaning to this? And what's happened to Virosa when she turned mushroom?
Sorry for a long rant but I just want to say that I really like your game and looking forward to more. Thanks you so much for making this game!
Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you learned something about mushrooms lol. When I first started working on this game, I didn't have the mushroom theme planned. I ended up drawing Muscaria after Virosa and realized "Wait, a mushroom theme would be really cool!" and just went with it. Important to note is that amanita muscaria has hallucinogenic properties, which aligns with Muscaria's declining sanity.
Yeah, the main complaint I've had is about the font. Which is understandable, because I hate how the I looks too. I think I can change it to another Delius font for the next game.
There's no real symbolism behind the blue shirt. The red shirt is important because of the connotations related to red (like violence, blood, etc.) which represents the hero's play style. But it also connects Muscaria and Virosa, because they gave her an "muscaria" colored shirt. It just kind of represents that they both need each other; Muscaria because Virosa is the only reason they're alive, and Virosa because she wouldn't have been able to progress in the game without this shop.
Virosa's mushroom form is symbolic and not something that actually happened. Muscaria perceived her in this monstrous form partially because of their mental state and worsening perception of her, and because Virosa's way of playing the game turned her into a worse "monster" than the actual enemies. It's symbolic of how players can do horrible things in video games, to the point of seeming worse than the antagonists. So yeah, Virosa never actually turned into a mushroom monster.
Amanita August is a breath of fresh air in the 'deceptively-cute indie horror' genre! A humble game, it has enough faith in its concept and respect for the player that it doesn't need overused tricks such as cheap jumpscares or invasively accessing computer files to build a subtle, rising sense of horror.
I hear there are more stories in this universe to be told! Looking forward to it ^^~
Well, I'm not done with this world or the characters yet, so we'll see what happens in the future! I have a lot of things to plan and a lot of ideas to work with.
a great game! I found this via manly but decided to play it myself :D The concept is really strong and I like the small details in the background as the story goes on. also the way the endings work is quite unique! good luck creating more games, I'm glad manly played your game

Well, I'm not done with this world or the characters yet, so we'll see what happens in the future! I have a lot of things to plan and a lot of ideas to work with.
